Full disclosure: I did not post this in Hong Kong. I did however write an email which I have translated and posted below:
Hey Folks
I’m in Hong Kong right now, and I’ve found a netcafĂ© while I’m waiting for my gate to open. I was going to send a text message, but this was more informative, free if you buy food (in my case Evian – the dryness of the air on planes turned out to be true), plus I got a bit confused as to whether I needed to dial the 0011 international call code before the country code, when texting rather than calling, and I figured experimenting might be more costly than it’s really worth :) Anyways, nothing much to tell – when I’m not sitting in a plane I’m being herded around like a sheep, getting security screened for the umpteenth time or I just sit and stare at nothing in particular. I got 4-5 hours of restless sleep, which beats no sleep at all by quite a margin. And the plane-earplugs seem to work – I had forgetten to use them on the trip to London and got rather unpleasant popping in my ears during the descent (the ascent is apparently never a problem). By contrast, I felt almost nothing during the landing here in Hong Kong, even though we descended from a height of 11 km versus only 6.5 in London. Don’t really know if I’m jetlagged, since I don’t see much of Mother Nature’s suggested time of day, while in this airconditioned departure lounge – we’ll see when I reach Sydney. Well, the final stage of my trip awaits, and morale is better than expected :) Have fun back home!
